Apple Pie Turnovers

Instructions

1
Preheat oven to 425°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment or a silicone baking mat.
2
In a medium size bowl, combine the chopped apple, cinnamon and brown sugar. Set aside.
3
Unroll your pie crust on a parchment-lined or floured surface.
4
Using a 4-inch round cookie cutter (or any fun shape you like!), cut out as many circles as possible.
5
Place 2 teaspoons of the apple mixture in the center of half of the dough cut outs. These will be your bases.
6
Lightly dab a little water around the edges of each base cutout. Place a second dough cutout on top and gently press around the edges to seal.
7
Transfer the turnovers to the prepared baking sheet.
8
Poke 3–4 small vents in the top of each turnover with a toothpick. If you'd like them extra golden, whisk 1 egg with 1 teaspoon of water and brush it lightly over the tops (optional).
9
Bake for 15-18 minutes, until crust is golden brown. Allow to cool on baking sheet for 10 minutes and then serve.

Tips & Tricks (5)

  • Pre-Chill Your Dough ❄️
Refrigerate pie dough for at least 30 minutes before filling and sealing to prevent shrinkage and ensure crispy, flaky turnovers that hold their shape perfectly.
  • Macerate Your Apples 🍎
Toss diced apples with brown sugar and cinnamon 15 minutes before filling to draw out excess moisture, preventing soggy turnovers while concentrating the flavor.
  • Seal Edges Properly 🔐
Use a fork to press and crimp the edges firmly, then brush with egg wash for a gorgeous golden finish and to ensure the filling doesn't leak during baking.
  • Ventilation Prevents Explosions 💨
Cut small slits or use a fork to pierce the top of each turnover before baking to allow steam to escape and prevent bursting in the oven.
  • Cool Before Eating 🧊
Let turnovers rest for 5 minutes after baking before serving, as the filling will be extremely hot; this also allows the filling to set slightly for easier handling.
