Tips & Tricks (5)
- Pre-cook Potatoes for Even Texture 🥔Parboil diced potatoes for 5-7 minutes before adding to the casserole to ensure they cook through evenly while the cheese sauce sets, preventing hard centers.
- Make a True Béchamel Base 🧈Create a roux by cooking butter and flour together for 1-2 minutes before adding milk—this prevents lumps and creates a silky, restaurant-quality cheese sauce.
- Layer Ham Strategically 🍖Distribute ham pieces between potato layers rather than mixing throughout to create pockets of concentrated ham flavor and prevent it from clumping together.
- Use Sharp Cheddar at the End ⭐Reserve half your sharp cheddar to stir in off-heat after cooking—this preserves its bold flavor and prevents it from becoming stringy or separating.
- Tent Then Uncover for Texture 🍽️Cover the casserole with foil for the first 30 minutes of baking, then uncover for the final 10-15 minutes to develop a golden, crispy cheese topping.
