1/8
Crispy Baked Onion Rings
Instructions
1
Preheat oven to 425°F.
2
Cut onions into 1/2 inch rounds and separate into rings.
3
Whisk buttermilk and 1 teaspoon salt in a bowl.
4
Mix breadcrumbs and 1 teaspoon salt in a separate bowl. If adding extra seasonings, stir them in here (about 1 teaspoon total).
5
Thoroughly submerge the onion rings in the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the breadcrumb mixture, coating both sides completely. Use one hand for the wet mixture and one hand for the dry mixture to avoid soggy, clumpy breadcrumbs.
6
Use a fork to place onion rings on a oil sprayed baking sheet.
7
Lightly spray the tops of the onion rings with cooking spray.
8
Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
9
Serve with dipping sauce like ketchup, mayonnaise, or ranch.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Double-Dredge for Maximum Crunch 🍞Dip onion rings in buttermilk, coat with breadcrumbs, then repeat the process for an extra-thick, ultra-crispy exterior that rivals deep-fried versions.
- Freeze Before Baking ❄️Place breaded onion rings on a baking sheet in the freezer for at least 30 minutes before baking to help the coating set and prevent the onions from releasing excess moisture during cooking.
- Use Panko for Superior Texture 🥣Replace regular breadcrumbs with panko for larger, airier crumbs that create a noticeably crispier and more satisfying texture when baked.
- Oil Spray Application Technique 💨Apply cooking oil spray in two light passes from different angles rather than one heavy coat to ensure even browning and prevent soggy spots from excess oil pooling.
- Bake on a Wire Rack 🔲Place onion rings on an elevated wire rack set over your baking sheet to allow hot air to circulate underneath, ensuring crispiness on all sides rather than a soggy bottom.
