Tips & Tricks (5)
- Toast Your Lentils First 🔥Dry-toast the lentils in a skillet for 2-3 minutes before adding to the crock pot to deepen their nutty flavor and improve texture consistency during cooking.
- Layer Your Aromatics Strategically 🧅Sauté the onion, garlic, celery, carrots, and leeks in olive oil before adding to the crock pot to caramelize their natural sugars and build a richer flavor foundation for the entire stew.
- Add Greens at the End ⏰Stir in your kale or swiss chard during the last 20-30 minutes of cooking to preserve their nutrients, vibrant color, and prevent them from becoming mushy and bitter.
- Bloom Your Thyme and Bay Leaves 🌿Crush fresh thyme leaves slightly and add bay leaves early so they infuse their essential oils throughout the cooking time, then remove bay leaves before serving.
- Adjust Broth Ratio for Consistency 💧Use slightly less vegetable broth than you think you need, as lentils absorb liquid and release starches; you can always add more at the end but cannot remove excess liquid from a slow cooker.
