Tips & Tricks (5)
- Brown the Beef First 🍖Always sear the ground beef in a hot skillet before adding to the crock pot to develop a rich, caramelized crust that adds deep umami flavor to your sauce.
- Bloom Your Spices 🌿Toast the dried Italian herbs, garlic powder, and onion powder in the hot pan with the beef for 30 seconds before transferring to the crock pot to amplify their aromatic intensity.
- Layer Your Liquids Strategically 💧Add tomato paste directly to the hot skillet with the beef, let it caramelize for 1-2 minutes, then deglaze with water before transferring—this prevents the paste from burning and creates a richer base.
- Cook Low and Long for Sweetness 🕐Use the LOW setting for 6-8 hours instead of HIGH to allow the natural sugars in tomatoes and carrots to slowly concentrate, creating a naturally sweet and complex flavor profile.
- Finish with Fresh Basil and Adjustment 🫒In the last 15 minutes of cooking, stir in fresh basil and taste to adjust salt and acidity with a splash of red wine vinegar—this brightens the sauce after hours of slow cooking.
