Easy Small Batch Puppy Chow
Instructions
1
Line a small sheet pan with parchment paper. Then, place the Chex cereal in a medium mixing bowl.
2
Add the semi-sweet chocolate chips, unsalted butter, and peanut butter to a heatproof bowl. Microwave the mixture in 30 second increments, stirring between each round, until the chocolate-peanut mixture is completely smooth and thin enough to drizzle. Stir in the vanilla extract and Kosher salt.
3
Pour the chocolate-peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Use a rubber spatula to gently toss everything together until the cereal is well-coated. Let it cool for about 5 minutes.
4
Then, transfer the cereal to a zipper bag (a paper bag works too). Add half of the powdered sugar, seal the bag, and shake it rapidly until the cereal is coated in the powdered sugar. Add the remaining powdered sugar and shake once more. If the cereal is still sticky, add more powdered sugar as needed.
5
Spread the cereal on the prepared sheet pan. You can eat it right away, but I like to let it set for 30-60 minutes so it doesn't stick together too much. Enjoy!

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Microwave in Short Bursts 🔥Heat the chocolate, butter, and peanut butter in 30-second intervals, stirring between each burst, to prevent scorching and ensure smooth, even melting without lumps.
- Coat While Warm 🌡️Toss the cereal with the chocolate mixture immediately after it's melted while still warm—this ensures even coating and prevents the chocolate from setting too quickly on the cereal pieces.
- Double Your Flavor Boost 🥜Since this recipe emphasizes extra peanut butter and vanilla, add an extra ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract and use natural creamy peanut butter for deeper, more authentic flavor that stands out in small batches.
- Dry Your Cereal First ✨Spread the rice cereal on a paper towel for 5 minutes before coating to remove any moisture, which helps the chocolate coating adhere better and prevents clumping.
- Cool on Parchment for Easy Cleanup 📄Spread the coated puppy chow on parchment paper to cool completely—this prevents sticking to surfaces and makes cleanup effortless while allowing the chocolate to set evenly.
