Tips & Tricks (5)
- Caramelize Onions Separately 🧅Caramelize your yellow onions in a separate skillet over medium-low heat for 25-30 minutes before layering, developing deep umami flavors that the soup mix alone cannot achieve.
- Slice Potatoes Uniformly Thin 🥔Use a mandoline slicer to cut potatoes to exactly 1/8-inch thickness, ensuring even cooking and creamy texture throughout the bake without mushy or undercooked spots.
- Bloom the Soup Mix 🌿Whisk the dry onion soup mix directly into your heavy cream and let it sit for 5 minutes before layering to fully hydrate the seasonings and distribute flavor evenly.
- Layer Strategically for Flavor Distribution 📚Alternate thin layers of potatoes, caramelized onions, Parmesan, and cream mixture, ensuring every bite gets the complete French onion experience rather than settling of ingredients.
- Add Fresh Parsley at the End ✨Reserve fresh parsley and sprinkle generously only after removing from the oven to maintain its bright color, fresh flavor, and textural contrast against the rich, creamy bake.
