Tips & Tricks (5)
- Slice Potatoes Uniformly 🔪Use a mandoline slicer set to 1/8-inch thickness to ensure even cooking throughout the gratin, preventing some layers from being undercooked while others are mushy.
- Parboil Potatoes First 💧Briefly boil sliced potatoes for 3-4 minutes before layering to remove excess starch, which helps create a silkier sauce and prevents a gluey texture in the finished dish.
- Create a Cheese Paste 🧀Mix shredded white cheddar with a tablespoon of butter and flour before layering to distribute cheese evenly and prevent it from clumping, ensuring creamy consistency throughout every bite.
- Warm Your Dairy First 🥛Heat the milk and butter together before pouring over potatoes so the gratin cooks evenly and the cheese melts more smoothly without seizing or becoming grainy.
- Test Doneness with Resistance ✨Pierce the center of the gratin with a knife—it should slide through easily without resistance to confirm potatoes are fully tender and the dish is ready to serve.
