Heart-Shaped Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies
Instructions
1
|
Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring and scraping the pan every 10-15 seconds.
2
|
The butter will melt, foam, then turn golden brown with nutty aroma and small brown bits (about 5-7 minutes).
3
|
Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
4
|
In a large bowl, mix the brown butter with brown sugar and granulated sugar. Add the egg, extra yolk, and vanilla and mix well.
5
|
Fold in the flour, baking soda, and salt until just combined, do not overmix. The dough should be soft, not sticky. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
6
|
Cover and chill for at least 1 hour (or overnight).
7
|
Bring the cookie dough to room temp and Roll the cookie dough into small balls and place them on a baking tray.
8
|
Bake at 160°C until the edges are lightly browned and the centers are still soft.
9
|
As soon as you remove the cookies from the oven, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut them.
10
|
Optional: top with heart-shaped sprinkles.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Brown Butter Perfection 🧈Cook butter over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, swirling occasionally until it turns golden with a nutty aroma, then cool completely before mixing to prevent premature melting of chocolate chips.
- Sugar Balance Strategy 🍪Use a 1:1 ratio of granulated to brown sugar and don't overmix after adding them—this prevents overdevelopment of gluten while ensuring the cookies stay tender with subtle caramel notes.
- Chill Dough for Shape Retention 🧊Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours before shaping into hearts to prevent spreading during baking and maintain crisp, well-defined edges on your cookie shapes.
- Chocolate Chip Placement 🍫Press chocolate chips into the dough after shaping hearts but before baking, slightly pressing them into the surface so they stay embedded and create beautiful pockets of melted chocolate.
- Underbake Slightly for Ideal Texture ⏱️Remove cookies when edges are golden but centers still appear slightly underdone—they'll continue cooking from residual heat and deliver that perfect soft, chewy interior with a crispy edge.
