Instructions
1
|
Preheat oven to 450℉.
2
|
Place the garlic slices in a mortar and pestle and crush to form a paste. (Alternatively, place in a small bowl and use the back of a spoon to crush.)
3
|
Place the garlic in a small bowl with half of the butter and melt for 1 minute in the microwave.
4
|
Whisk in the salt, cayenne pepper and garlic powder until well incorporated, then whisk in the remaining butter.
5
|
Cut the loaf in half through the middle, then spread the garlic butter all over the cut edges of the loaves.
6
|
Place the sliced loaves on a cookie sheet and bake for 3 minutes until garlic butter is melted into the bread. Remove from oven.
7
|
Take a second baking sheet and press down on the top of the loaf to form a “press.”
8
|
Bake for 6-8 minutes, checking at the 5 minute mark to prevent the minced garlic from burning. The bread should be deeply golden and will have a few dark brown spots, especially where the minced garlic is concentrated.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Roast Fresh Garlic First 🔥Roast minced fresh garlic in butter over low heat for 2-3 minutes before spreading to mellow its bite and develop a rich, sweet flavor that's far superior to garlic powder alone.
- Slice and Prep Your Bread Correctly ✂️Cut the Italian bread lengthwise in half rather than into individual slices, then score the cut surface diagonally to help the garlic butter penetrate deeper and distribute more evenly.
- Toast for Crispy Perfection 🥖Place buttered bread cut-side up on a preheated baking sheet at 400°F and broil for just 2-3 minutes rather than baking, which creates irresistibly crispy edges while keeping the interior soft.
- Layer Your Seasonings Strategically 🧂Combine fresh minced garlic with garlic powder, then add salt and cayenne pepper to the butter mixture before spreading—this creates complex depth instead of one-dimensional garlic flavor.
- Use Room Temperature Butter 🧈Soften butter to room temperature before mixing with garlic and seasonings so it spreads smoothly and evenly without tearing the bread or creating cold spots.
