Instructions

1
|
Preheat oven to 350* F. In a small bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and cinnamon. Set aside.
2
|
In a medium bowl, stir together the peanut butter and apple sauce. Add the flour mixture one cup at a time until it forms a stiff dough. Add more flour as necessary – you want it to be stiff enough to roll and shape. Alternatively, if the dough is too stiff, add water 1 Tablespoon at a time until it is workable.
3
|
On a floured surface, roll the dough to 1/8-1/4” thickness. Cut out cookies using a cookie cutter, or cut into squares. Re-roll the dough as necessary, cutting out cookies until it’s all used up.
4
|
Place cookies on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until they are lightly brown and starting to get crunchy (they will also firm up as they cool). Cool the cookies on a wire rack, and store them in an airtight container for up to a week. You can also freeze them!

Tips & Tricks (5)

  • Peanut Butter Quality Matters 🥜
Always use all-natural, unsweetened peanut butter without xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Check the ingredient list to ensure it contains only peanuts and maybe a touch of salt.
  • Flour Consistency Trick 🌾
Sift the white whole wheat flour to remove any clumps and ensure a smoother, more consistent dough that will result in better-textured cookies for your pup.
  • Rolling Thickness Secret 🍪
Roll the dough to a consistent 1/4-inch thickness to ensure even baking and uniform cooking time for perfect dog treats every batch.
  • Storage Pro Tip 🐶
Store homemade dog cookies in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.
  • Customization Hack 🎨
Experiment with adding dog-safe ingredients like finely chopped carrots or a sprinkle of parsley to boost nutritional value and add variety to the treats.
