Instructions
1
|
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a 13×9 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
2
|
Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Stir in the onion, celery, and garlic, and cook 5 minutes or until tender.
3
|
Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a medium saucepan, and whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk and continue cooking 5 minutes, until sauce is smooth and slightly thickened.
4
|
Add cheddar cheese. If sauce is too thick, slowly stir in reserved pasta water until sauce is desired consistency. Season with salt and pepper.
5
|
Stir in tuna, peas, onion mixture and cooked noodles. Transfer to the baking dish.
6
|
Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter and mix with bread crumbs, and sprinkle over the casserole.
7
|
Bake 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until bubbly and lightly browned.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Drain Tuna Thoroughly 🐟Press canned tuna between paper towels to remove excess liquid, preventing a watery casserole and ensuring a creamy, concentrated tuna flavor.
- Toast Your Panko 🥖Toss panko breadcrumbs with melted butter and bake at 350°F for 3-4 minutes before topping to achieve a golden, crispy crust instead of a soggy layer.
- Make a Proper Béchamel 🧈Create a smooth roux by cooking butter and flour together for 1-2 minutes before adding milk gradually while whisking to avoid lumps in your cheese sauce.
- Don't Overcook the Noodles 🍝Cook egg noodles 1-2 minutes under the package time since they'll continue cooking in the oven, keeping them tender rather than mushy.
- Sauté Your Aromatics First 🧅Bloom diced celery, onion, and garlic in butter for 2-3 minutes before building your sauce to develop deep, complex flavors that elevate the entire dish.
