Tips & Tricks (5)

  • Master the Caramelization 🧅
Cook onions low and slow (30-40 minutes) over medium heat, stirring frequently and adding a pinch of sugar to accelerate browning without burning. This deep caramelization is essential for authentic, complex flavor.
  • Toast Your Bread Cubes 🥖
Brush bread cubes lightly with butter and toast at 375°F for 8-10 minutes until golden and crispy before topping the soup. This prevents sogginess and creates the perfect textural contrast with the melted cheese.
  • Layer Your Cheese Strategically 🧀
Place toasted bread in the bowl first, add hot soup, then top with Swiss cheese and broil for 2-3 minutes until bubbly. This layering prevents bread from floating while ensuring maximum melted cheese coverage.
  • Build Umami with Worcestershire 🍶
Add Worcestershire sauce during the final 5 minutes of simmering rather than at the start to preserve its complex, pungent flavors that deepen the broth's savory richness.
  • Use Quality Beef Broth 🍲
Invest in homemade or premium low-sodium beef broth rather than bouillon; the deeper, richer flavor creates a more luxurious soup that showcases the caramelized onions beautifully.
