My Red Velvet Chex Muddy Recipe is extremely easy to make. I grew up eating muddy buddies but I am always looking to reinvent things. So I took my favorite things and made a new version with red velvet cake mix and M&M candies. I brought some to a friend’s movie night, and it was a total hit. Everyone was asking for the recipe, and I had to fight to keep some for myself! It’s the perfect sweet treat for any occasion, and honestly, it’s just plain fun to make.

Tips & Tricks (5)

  • Melt Chocolate Evenly 🍫
Use the double boiler method or microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, to prevent the red chocolate candy melts from seizing and becoming grainy.
  • Toast Cereal Lightly 🥣
Lightly toast the Chex cereal in a dry skillet for 2-3 minutes before coating to enhance its crunch and prevent it from becoming soggy after mixing with the wet ingredients.
  • Dry Ingredients First 🎂
Combine the red velvet cake mix with melted butter before adding to the chocolate-coated cereal to create an even, flavorful coating that distributes uniformly throughout.
  • Cool Before Coating ❄️
Allow the chocolate candy melts to cool slightly (about 1-2 minutes) after melting so they coat the cereal without making it too wet or causing the powdered sugar to dissolve.
  • Strategic M&M Timing 🍬
Add the M&M's during the final toss when the mixture has cooled slightly to prevent the candy coating from melting while still getting them evenly distributed throughout the snack mix.
