Tips & Tricks (5)
- Brown the Beef Properly 🍖Break the ground beef into small, even pieces while browning and cook until deeply caramelized before adding other ingredients to build rich, savory depth in your sauce.
- Toast Your Spices First 🌶️Bloom the dry mustard and celery seed in the pan with the beef for 30 seconds before adding liquids to unlock their full aromatic potential and enhance the sloppy joe flavor profile.
- Crisp the Tater Tots 🥔Bake frozen tater tots for 5 minutes before assembly to create a pre-crust that prevents them from becoming soggy when combined with the wet sloppy joe mixture.
- Layer Strategically for Even Cooking 🧅Spread the sloppy joe mixture evenly across the casserole dish before topping with tater tots, then sprinkle cheese between and over the tots to ensure melted cheese throughout rather than just on top.
- Rest Before Serving ⏱️Let the casserole sit for 5 minutes after removing from the oven so the tater tots set slightly and the cheese firms up, making it easier to serve neat portions.
