Tips & Tricks (5)
- Brown the Beef Properly 🍖Cook ground beef in a hot skillet without moving it for 2-3 minutes to develop a flavorful crust, then break it apart for maximum browning and depth of flavor in your sloppy joe filling.
- Balance Your Sauce Sweetness ⚖️Taste the sloppy joe mixture and adjust the sugar and vinegar ratio gradually—the vinegar cuts through richness while sugar balances the ketchup's acidity for a perfectly nuanced sauce.
- Partially Bake Tater Tots First 🥔Bake frozen tater tots for 10-12 minutes before adding the sloppy joe mixture so they're partially cooked and won't absorb excess moisture, ensuring crispy edges and fluffy centers.
- Drain Your Ground Beef Thoroughly 💧After browning, transfer beef to a fine-mesh strainer and let fat drain completely for 1-2 minutes to prevent a greasy casserole and keep the sloppy joe sauce balanced.
- Add Cheese in Two Layers 🧀Sprinkle half the cheddar between the meat and tater tots and the remaining half on top so it melts throughout the casserole while the top layer gets gloriously golden and crispy.
