Tips & Tricks (5)
- Choose the Right Apple Variety 🍎Use tart, firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp that hold their shape during baking and provide bright acidity to balance the sweet potatoes' richness.
- Slice Sweet Potatoes Uniformly 🔪Cut sweet potatoes into consistent 1/4-inch slices to ensure even cooking throughout the casserole and prevent some pieces from being undercooked while others become mushy.
- Toast Your Pecans First 🥜Lightly toast pecans in a dry skillet for 3-4 minutes before adding to the topping to intensify their nutty flavor and add extra crunch that won't soften as much during baking.
- Bloom Your Spices in Butter 🧈Melt the butter and mix it with cinnamon and nutmeg before combining with brown sugar and flour; this blooms the spices and distributes them evenly throughout the topping for consistent flavor.
- Cover Then Uncover for Texture 📋Bake covered with foil for the first 30 minutes to steam the sweet potatoes tender, then uncover for the final 15-20 minutes to allow the pecan topping to crisp and golden brown.
