Instructions
1
|
Preheat the oven to 350 ℉.
2
|
In a medium skillet, cook ground sausage over medium heat while breaking into small pieces until no longer pink.
3
|
Remove skillet from heat, drain grease from sausage and set aside.
4
|
Grease a 9′ x 13′ baking dish with cooking oil spray. (Glass works best.)
5
|
Spread the crumbled sausage in an even layer over the bottom of the baking dish.
6
|
In a medium bowl whisk eggs, half and half, garlic powder, salt and pepper until well combined.
7
|
Pour the egg mixture over the sausage in the baking dish.
8
|
Top with shredded cheese.
9
|
Place frozen tater tots evenly over the top of sausage, egg and cheese mixture. Do not submerge tater tots.
10
|
Bake for approx. 50 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.
11
|
Remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Brown Sausage Thoroughly 🍳Cook the ground sausage until deeply browned and slightly crispy before mixing into the egg mixture; this develops rich flavor and prevents soggy casserole texture.
- Don't Thaw Tater Tots 🥔Keep tater tots frozen when layering into the casserole—they'll cook perfectly during baking and maintain their crispy exterior rather than becoming mushy.
- Make-Ahead Overnight Method ⏰Prepare the casserole completely, cover tightly, and refrigerate overnight; the egg mixture will fully absorb into the layers for superior texture and deeper seasoning integration.
- Use Quality Aged Cheddar 🧀Choose sharp or extra-sharp aged cheddar instead of mild varieties—it delivers robust, complex flavor that won't get lost among the other ingredients and prevents the casserole from tasting bland.
- Layer Strategically for Even Cooking 📐Create three distinct layers: sausage mixture on bottom, tater tots in middle, then cheese on top; this ensures the eggs set properly while tater tots stay crispy and cheese browns beautifully.
