Tips & Tricks (5)
- Score the Skin for Maximum Caramelization 🔪Lightly score the delicata skin in a crosshatch pattern before roasting to increase surface area, allowing the exterior to caramelize beautifully while the flesh stays tender.
- Pat Dry Before Oiling 💧Use paper towels to completely dry your squash halves before coating with olive oil—this removes excess moisture that prevents proper caramelization and browning.
- Use a Preheated Baking Sheet 🔥Place your squash cut-side down on a preheated baking sheet at 425°F to create an immediate searing effect, developing rich caramelized edges in 25-30 minutes.
- Layer Your Seasonings Strategically 🧂Apply kosher salt and black pepper before baking for depth, then finish with smoked paprika in the final 5 minutes so its delicate smoke flavor doesn't burn off.
- Test Tenderness with a Fork 🍴Pierce the thickest part of the flesh with a fork—it should slide through easily like warm butter when perfectly done, ensuring you don't undercook or dry it out.
