Tips & Tricks (5)
- Fresh Blood Orange Selection 🍊Choose blood oranges that feel heavy for their size and have deep crimson coloring, then juice them fresh just before mixing to capture maximum brightness and prevent oxidation of the delicate citrus notes.
- Temperature Chilling Technique ❄️Pre-chill your glass and cocktail shaker with ice for at least 2 minutes before mixing to ensure proper dilution and a silky texture that balances the bourbon's warmth with refreshing coolness.
- Amaro d'Erbe Balance ⚖️Start with slightly less Amaro d'Erbe than called for, then taste and adjust upward, as its herbal intensity varies by brand and can easily overpower the blood orange's brightness if over-measured.
- Blood Orange Garnish Technique 🔪Express the oils from a blood orange twist over the drink's surface by twisting the peel sharply over the glass, then drop it in to add both visual drama and aromatic complexity to each sip.
- Bourbon Quality Matters 🥃Use a higher-proof bourbon (90+ proof) rather than standard 80-proof varieties, as it provides better structure and flavor intensity to stand up to the Aperol and Amaro without getting lost in the citrus.
