Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and spray 2 6 inch cake pans with cooking oil. I also like to line them with parchment paper for easy removal.
2
Start by whisking together the dry ingredients in a medium bowl: flour, baking soda, and salt.
3
In a large bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients: pumpkin puree, apple sauce, peanut butter, egg, and milk. Once fully combined, fold in the dry ingredients.
4
Divide the batter evenly between the 2 cake pans and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cakes are set and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let the cakes cool completely before icing.
5
Make the icing by whisking together the yogurt and peanut butter.
6
Ice the cake and decorate as desired! Optional for decoration: mini dog bones
Notes
1
For the frosting, you could replace the peanut butter with several other things as desired such as pumpkin, sweet potato, pureed fruit etc. Sometimes using different fruits is fun because it gives the frosting a different color!

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Natural Peanut Butter Selection 🥜Use only natural peanut butter without xylitol or added sugars, as xylitol is toxic to dogs. Stir the oil back into the peanut butter before measuring to ensure consistent texture and proper ingredient distribution.
- Room Temperature Ingredients 🌡️Bring eggs, yogurt, and milk to room temperature before mixing to create a smoother, lump-free batter that bakes more evenly and produces a better crumb structure.
- Applesauce and Pumpkin Ratio Balance 🎃Ensure your applesauce and pumpkin puree are unsweetened and measure them precisely, as too much liquid can result in a dense, gummy cake instead of a moist, cake-like texture.
- Baking Soda Activation Secret ✨Mix your baking soda with the wet ingredients first before combining with dry ingredients, as this activates the leavening agent immediately and produces better rise and a lighter crumb.
- Cooling and Serving Strategy 🐕Always cool the cake completely before serving to your dog, as warm cake can cause digestive upset and allows proper structure for slicing into appropriate-sized portions for your pet's safety.
