Instructions

1
|
Season the prime rib liberally on all sides with salt and black pepper.
2
|
Line a roasting pan with heavy-duty aluminum foil and position a roasting rack inside of it.
3
|
Transfer the prime rib fat side up to the middle of the roasting rack. Tent the prime rib loosely with foil, and allow it to stand at room temperature for 1-2 hours.
4
|
Preheat the oven to 500°F.
5
|
Place the softened butter, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Stir with a fork to combine.
6
|
Using a spoon and clean hands, spread the seasoned butter over the top surface of the meat.
7
|
Roast the prime rib on the middle rack of oven for 20 minutes.
8
|
Reduce the oven temperature to 325°F. Continue roasting the prime rib until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 120-145°F, depending on desired doneness, 75-100 minutes.
9
|
Check to see that prime rib is done. Remove from oven or add time as needed.
10
|
Allow the prime rib to rest on the rack for 15-30 minutes, then transfer to a cutting board and untie. Carve and serve immediately. Refrigerate leftovers up to 5 days or freeze up to 6 months.

Tips & Tricks (5)

  • Bone-In Selection 🦴
Choose a bone-in prime rib roast for enhanced flavor and more even cooking, as the bones act as natural heat conductors.
  • Butter Basting Technique 🧈
Create a flavorful butter mixture with garlic powder and Italian seasoning, and baste the roast every 30 minutes for maximum moisture and flavor penetration.
  • Room Temperature Prep 🌡️
Remove the prime rib from the refrigerator 1-2 hours before cooking to ensure even temperature distribution and more consistent roasting.
  • Crust Perfection Trick 🔥
Pat the roast completely dry before seasoning to achieve a perfect golden-brown crust that seals in the meat's natural juices.
  • Fat Cap Positioning 🥩
Always place the fat cap facing upward during roasting, allowing the melting fat to naturally baste the meat and enhance tenderness.
