Tips & Tricks (5)
- Prevent Soggy Topping 🥣Keep your butter cold and work it into the oat mixture with your fingertips until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs—this creates a crumbly texture that stays crunchy even after baking.
- Maximize Apple Flavor 🍎Mix your apples with lemon juice and let them sit for 10 minutes before adding to the baking dish; this breaks down the cell walls and intensifies the apple flavor while preventing browning.
- Perfect Gluten-Free Flour Blend 🌾Add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch or tapioca starch to your gluten-free 1-1 flour blend for better texture and to prevent a gritty or dense crumb topping.
- Cinnamon Layering Technique 🤎Divide your cinnamon between the apple filling and oat topping rather than using it all in one spot—this distributes warm spice throughout the dish for a more balanced, complex flavor.
- Ideal Cooling Window ⏱️Allow the crisp to cool for 15-20 minutes after baking before serving; this lets the filling set slightly while the topping remains warm and crunchy, creating the perfect texture contrast.
