German Mulled Wine (Glühwein)
This German Mulled Wine is a lighter take on classic Glühwein, made with less sugar and a little less alcohol. The secret is apple tea, which is combined with red wine, fresh orange, and warming spices for a festive drink that's flavorful without being overly sweet.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Step 1
Pour 1 cup (250 ml) of boiling water over the tea bag and let it steep for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, juice one orange and strain the juice to remove the pulp. Wash the second orange thoroughly and cut it into slices.
- Step 2
Combine the red wine, spices, and prepared apple tea in a saucepan. Reserve 4 orange slices for garnish and add the remaining slices to the wine. Heat gently over low heat for about 10 minutes, until hot and fragrant. Do not let the mulled wine boil or come to a simmer.
- Step 3
Add the orange juice and sugar, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Stir in the rum and continue heating gently for another 2 minutes, without letting the wine boil.
- Step 4
Strain the mulled wine through a fine-mesh sieve and divide it among 4 mugs. Garnish each mug with a reserved orange slice and serve hot.
