Instructions
1
Pour 1 cup (250 ml) of boiling water over the tea bag and let it steep for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, juice one orange and strain out the pulp. Wash the second orange thoroughly and slice it.
2
Combine the red wine, spices, and apple tea in a pot. Set aside four orange slices for garnish, and add the remaining slices to the pot. Heat the wine gently over low heat for about 10 minutes—do not boil or let it steam heavily.
3
Add the orange juice and sugar, stirring well to dissolve the sugar. Then add the rum and let the mixture steep for another 2 minutes.
4
Strain the mulled wine through a fine sieve and pour it into 4 cups. Garnish with the reserved orange slices and serve hot.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Toast Spices First for Depth 🔥Lightly toast the cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves in a dry pan for 1-2 minutes before adding to the wine to unlock their essential oils and intensify their aromatic complexity without adding calories.
- Steep Don't Boil 🍷Keep the mulled wine at a gentle simmer (around 160-180°F) rather than a rolling boil to preserve the delicate fruity notes from the apple tea and red wine while preventing alcohol from evaporating too quickly.
- Fresh Orange Timing Strategy 🍊Add freshly squeezed orange juice in the final 5 minutes and reserved orange slices just before serving to maintain their bright acidity and vitamin content, preventing them from becoming bitter during prolonged heating.
- Balance Sweetness with Rum 🥃Add the rum just before serving and taste-adjust the sweetener after, as rum's subtle sweetness develops as the drink cools, helping you achieve the perfect flavor balance with minimal added sugar.
- Infuse Tea Separately for Control 🫖Brew the apple tea as a concentrated infusion in advance and add it gradually to the warm wine mixture, giving you precise control over the tea's strength and preventing over-steeping bitterness that can dominate low-calorie versions.
