My Orange Crush Cake is a retro-inspired dessert that’s as fun to make as it is to eat. With a soft, soda-infused crumb and a sweet orange glaze, it’s the kind of cake that I bring to church potlucks, summer cookouts, and my grandma’s kitchen table. Let’s dive into why this recipe deserves a permanent spot in your dessert rotation.

Instructions

1
|
Preheat oven to 350F.
2
|
Grease a 9″ x 11″ casserole dish and set aside.
3
|
In a large bowl, beat together the white cake mix and Sunkist for 2 minutes.
4
|
Bake for 25-30 minutes, until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
5
|
Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting.
6
|
Meanwhile, place 1 cup of Sunkist in a saucepan and heat until boiling over medium-high heat. Reduce to medium-low and simmer until reduce to 1/4 (2 oz of soda should remain). Allow to cool completely.
7
|
In a large bowl, beat together the butter and powdered icing sugar for 2 minutes, then add the reduced Sunkist soda. Beat to incorporate, then add the milk as needed to achieve a spreadable texture. Adjust the color with orange food dye, if desired.
8
|
Use an offset spatula to spread the frosting on the cooled cake.
9
|
To achieve the fun texture shown in the pictures, use short strokes to spread the frosting, then go back over the frosted cake and rough it up a bit.
10
|
Garnish the cake with sprinkles and orange slices, as desired.

Tips & Tricks (5)

  • Soda Infusion Secret 🍊
For maximum orange flavor, replace the water in the cake mix with cold Sunkist soda, ensuring it's freshly opened and at room temperature for optimal carbonation impact.
  • Glaze Consistency Hack 🥣
Warm your orange slices slightly before incorporating into the glaze to help release more natural oils and intensify the citrus flavor profile.
  • Sprinkle Strategy 🎉
Apply orange sprinkles immediately after glazing while the surface is still slightly warm to help them adhere perfectly and prevent clumping.
  • Moisture Preservation Trick 💦
Cover the cake with a loose aluminum foil tent while cooling to trap moisture and prevent the edges from drying out too quickly.
  • Flavor Layering Technique 🌈
Poke small holes in the warm cake before applying the glaze to allow deeper orange soda penetration and more intense flavor throughout.
