Tips & Tricks (5)
- Sear Before Slow Cooking 🔥Brown the beef roast in a hot skillet for 2-3 minutes per side before adding to the slow cooker to develop a rich, caramelized crust that deepens the gravy's flavor complexity.
- Layer Your Aromatics Strategically 🧅Place onions and garlic on the slow cooker bottom as a flavor bed, then nestle the roast on top to prevent it from steaming rather than braising, ensuring better texture and taste development.
- Thicken Gravy at the End ✨Mix cornstarch with cold water to create a slurry and stir it in during the last 30 minutes of cooking on high to achieve silky, restaurant-quality gravy without a chalky mouthfeel.
- Don't Skip the Red Wine 🍷Use quality red wine (not cooking wine) as it adds acidity that tenderizes the meat while its tannins enrich the gravy—this elevates the dish from ordinary to exceptional.
- Drain Excess Fat Before Serving 🥄Use a fat separator pitcher or let the finished dish rest uncovered for 5 minutes, then skim surface fat to achieve a cleaner taste and more elegant presentation.
