Tips & Tricks (5)
- Pat Dry and Sear First 🔥Pat the stew meat completely dry before searing in a hot pan—this creates a flavorful brown crust that deepens the gravy's richness and prevents the meat from steaming.
- Bloom Your Dried Herbs 🌿Toast the dried thyme and bay leaf in a dry pan for 30 seconds before adding to the slow cooker to intensify their flavors and prevent a dull, flat taste in your gravy.
- Cornstarch Slurry Secret ✨Mix cornstarch with cold water separately to create a smooth slurry, then stir it in during the last 30 minutes of cooking to achieve a silky, restaurant-quality gravy without lumps.
- Low Setting for Maximum Tenderness 🥩Cook on LOW for 6-8 hours rather than HIGH—the gentle, prolonged heat breaks down collagen into gelatin, creating melt-in-your-mouth beef and an incredibly rich gravy.
- Balance Your Umami 🧂Add Worcestershire sauce in two stages: half at the start for depth and the remainder 30 minutes before serving to brighten the flavors without oversalting the final dish.
