Vegan Animal Style Fries (Copycat In N Out Recipe)
Animal style fries
For the caramelized onions
For the vegan animal sauce
Instructions
1
Cook fries according to package directions in the oven or air fryer. Once cooked, layer vegan cheese on top, and place back in the oven or air fryer until melted. Once fries are crispy and cheese is melted, remove from oven.
2
As the fries bake, caramelize onions in a saucepan by melting dairy free butter then stirring in chopped onions. Sauté for about 5-10 minutes, add a pinch of salt and pepper, and continue to sauté until the onions are browned and caramelized to perfection. If the onions begin to burn, add extra dairy free butter or oil.
3
To make the vegan animal style sauce, whisk ingredients together. Store covered in the fridge until ready to use.
4
Assemble animal style fries by topping cheese fries with desired amount of grilled onions and special sauce. Enjoy immediately!

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Caramelize Onions Low and Slow 🧅Cook diced yellow onions on medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and sweet. This develops the signature rich flavor that makes Animal Style fries authentic.
- Double-Fry for Maximum Crispiness 🍟Bake frozen fries at a higher temperature (425°F) for 5 minutes, shake the pan, then bake another 10-12 minutes until golden and crispy. This mimics the texture of fresh-cooked fries better than a single baking round.
- Warm Your Cheese Sauce 🧀Melt the vegan cheese slices gently with a splash of plant milk and dairy-free butter over low heat before drizzling, ensuring it flows smoothly over hot fries and adheres properly.
- Balance Your Secret Sauce 🤫Mix vegan mayo, ketchup, and pickle relish in a 3:2:1 ratio, then add white vinegar one teaspoon at a time until you achieve the perfect tangy-creamy balance that matches In N Out's signature taste.
- Assemble Immediately Before Serving ⏱️Top hot fries with warm caramelized onions, melted cheese, and sauce right before eating to prevent sogginess and maintain the contrast between crispy fries and warm toppings.
