Tips & Tricks (5)
- Prevent Cheese Separation 🧀Keep milk temperature below 180°F and stir constantly when adding Velveeta to prevent the cheese sauce from becoming grainy or separating during baking.
- Pre-Cook Broccoli Properly 🥦Blanch broccoli for only 2-3 minutes before adding to the casserole so it remains firm and doesn't turn mushy during the final baking time.
- Build Flavor Depth 🧅Caramelize the diced onion in butter for 5-7 minutes before mixing into the casserole base to add rich, complex sweetness that balances the processed cheese flavor.
- Achieve Creamy Consistency 🥛Use equal parts milk and melted butter (typically 1.5 cups each) rather than following vague ratios, and reserve 1/4 cup milk to adjust the sauce texture to your preference.
- Perfect Casserole Texture 🍲Undercook the rice by 2 minutes during initial cooking since it continues absorbing liquid in the oven, preventing a mushy final dish.
