Asian Sesame Roasted Broccoli
Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to 400°F.
2
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
3
Make sure the broccoli florets are roughly 1 inch wide, and place them in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle with the tamari, sesame oil, brown sugar, and crushed red pepper (if using). Toss until the florets are evenly coated.
4
Arrange the broccoli florets in an even layer on the baking sheet.
5
Roast on middle rack of oven, stirring halfway through the cook time, until broccoli is crisp-tender and slightly charred, 22-25 minutes.
6
Check to see that broccoli is done. Remove from oven or add time as needed.
7
Sprinkle the florets with sesame seeds, and serve immediately.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Pat Broccoli Dry for Crispiness 💧Thoroughly dry your broccoli florets with paper towels before tossing with oil; this removes surface moisture and allows the edges to caramelize beautifully instead of steaming.
- Toast Sesame Seeds Separately 🌱Lightly toast your sesame seeds in a dry pan for 1-2 minutes before adding to enhance their nutty flavor and prevent them from burning during the high-heat roasting process.
- Balance Sweet and Salty at the End ⚖️Toss the tamari and brown sugar glaze with the roasted broccoli immediately after removing from the oven while it's still hot, then taste and adjust seasoning as needed for perfect flavor balance.
- Use High Heat and Proper Spacing 🔥Roast at 425-450°F on a single layer with good spacing between florets to maximize caramelization; overcrowding causes steaming rather than the desired crispy-edged texture.
- Drizzle Sesame Oil Last 🫒Add the sesame oil as a finishing drizzle after roasting rather than before, as its delicate flavor burns easily at high temperatures and is better showcased when added at the end.
