Barbecue Baked Chicken Legs
Instructions
1
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
2
Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spray liberally with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
3
Place the chicken legs in a large mixing bowl and season with the salt and black pepper. Add the barbecue sauce and toss with a rubber spatula to thoroughly coat the chicken in the sauce.
4
Arrange the chicken legs on the prepared baking sheet.
5
Roast the chicken legs on middle rack of oven until slightly brown, 20-30 minutes.
6
Set the oven to broil. Broil the chicken until the skin is caramelized and the chicken has reached an internal temperature of 165°F, 3-5 minutes. Keep a close eye on the chicken to ensure it does not burn.
7
Check to see that chicken is done. Remove from oven or add time as needed.
8
Transfer to a plate and serve immediately, with additional barbecue sauce and with green onions if desired.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Dry Your Drumsticks First 🏜️Pat the chicken legs completely dry with paper towels before seasoning and spraying with nonstick cooking spray to ensure crispy, caramelized skin rather than steamed texture.
- Season Before Sauce Application 🧂Apply sea salt and black pepper directly to the raw chicken 15-20 minutes before adding barbecue sauce, allowing the seasonings to penetrate the meat for deeper flavor development.
- Two-Stage Sauce Technique 🎯Apply half the barbecue sauce midway through baking and the remaining half in the final 10 minutes to prevent burning while building layers of caramelized flavor on the exterior.
- Maximize Browning with Rack Positioning 📍Place drumsticks on the upper-middle oven rack and rotate the baking sheet halfway through cooking to ensure even heat circulation and develop a golden-brown crust on all sides.
- Reserve and Finish with Fresh Green Onions ✂️Chop fresh green onions and scatter them over the finished chicken just before serving to add bright, fresh flavor contrast and visual appeal that complements the rich barbecue sauce.
