Instructions
1
First, preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Generously spray a donut pan with nonstick spray.
2
In a large mixing bowl, add egg, vanilla extract, sour cream and melted butter. Use electric hand mixer to beat together.
3
Then, add in flour, black cocoa powder, Oreo crumbs, light brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and sea salt. Beat until a thick batter is formed.
4
Add batter to a piping bag or Ziplock bag. If using a Ziplock bag, gently snip off one corner.
5
Pipe batter into the greased donut pan. Fill cavities only halfway.
6
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs.
7
Remove donuts from oven. Once donuts have cooled completely, make frosting.
8
For the frosting, add melted butter, milk and powdered sugar to a small mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
9
Spread frosting over tops of cooled donuts. Garnish with chopped Oreos if desired.

Tips & Tricks (5)
- Crush Oreos Uniformly 🍪Pulse Oreos in a food processor until you achieve a mix of fine crumbs and small chunks—this creates texture variation in both the batter and frosting for authentic Oreo flavor and mouthfeel.
- Don't Overmix the Batter 🥣Mix wet and dry ingredients until just combined; overmixing develops gluten and creates dense, tough donuts instead of the fluffy, tender crumb you're aiming for.
- Use Black Cocoa Strategically 🖤Sift the black cocoa powder with your dry ingredients rather than adding it separately to ensure even distribution and prevent dark clumps that can create bitter pockets in your donuts.
- Frost While Still Warm ✨Apply the vanilla frosting to donuts while they're still slightly warm so it sets into a glossy coating; this prevents a thick, dull finish and helps the crushed Oreo topping adhere better.
- Chill Batter Before Piping 🧊Refrigerate the batter for 15-20 minutes before piping into donut molds; this prevents the batter from spreading and ensures clean, uniform shapes with proper rise during baking.
