Tips & Tricks (5)
- Brown the Beef Properly 🍖Break the ground beef into small chunks and let it sit undisturbed for 2-3 minutes per side to develop a deep golden crust, enhancing flavor far beyond rushed browning.
- Create a Roux Base 🥄After browning the beef, sprinkle flour over the meat and cook for 1-2 minutes before adding liquid—this creates a silky sauce that binds ingredients and prevents a watery filling.
- Layer Potato Topping Strategically 🥔Spread mashed potatoes in an even ½-inch layer and use a fork to create texture peaks, which will crisp up beautifully in the oven while protecting the filling underneath.
- Boost Umami with Tomato Paste 🍅Toast the tomato paste in the pan for 1-2 minutes before adding liquid to caramelize it slightly, deepening savory flavors and reducing any metallic taste from the can.
- Chill Before Baking for Better Structure 🧊Refrigerate the assembled pie for at least 30 minutes before baking so the potato topping firms up and stays intact rather than sinking into the warm beef filling.
