Tips & Tricks (5)
- Temper Your Eggs First 🥚Let eggs and milk sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before whisking to ensure even cooking and a creamy, custard-like texture throughout the casserole.
- Use a Water Bath for Perfection 💧Place your casserole dish in a larger pan filled with hot water while baking to create gentle, even heat that prevents rubbery edges and ensures a silky center.
- Don't Skip the Cheese Layer 🧀Reserve a handful of cheddar cheese to sprinkle on top 10 minutes before the casserole finishes baking for a golden, melted crust without burning the bottom.
- Test for Doneness Correctly ⏱ ️Insert a knife in the center—it should come out clean or with just a slight wobble in the very middle, as carryover cooking will set the rest as it cools.
- Let It Rest Before Serving 🍽️Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes after removing from the oven so it sets properly and slices cleanly without falling apart on the plate.
