Tips & Tricks (5)
- Day-Old Bread Magic 🍞Always use slightly stale challah for this casserole, as day-old bread absorbs the custard mixture more effectively without becoming too soggy.
- Zest Boost 🍊Freshly grated orange zest adds a bright, citrusy note that elevates the entire dish - use a microplane for the most delicate and fragrant zest.
- Custard Consistency Trick 🥚Whisk the egg mixture thoroughly and let it sit for 10 minutes before pouring over the bread to allow the flavors to meld and create a more uniform custard.
- Layering Technique 🥄Cut the challah into consistent 1-inch cubes and layer them loosely to ensure even custard distribution and create those delightful crispy edges.
- Make-Ahead Magic ⏰Prepare the casserole the night before and refrigerate overnight, allowing the bread to fully absorb the custard for an even more luxurious texture.
